The power of sunlight

The power of sunlight
Why is lockdown so much easier to tackle when it’s sunny? Is it the need to top up the tan, or perhaps it helps us justify cheeky daytime drinking? It’s the prime opportunity to ditch the jumpers, don the sunglasses and read outdoors. But whatever we think, there’s actually some watertight science behind our solar cravings.
.
Ultimately, it boils down to the desire for the rush of endorphins we get when we’re exposed to sunlight. But it does go deeper than that, though. When we’re in the rays, our bodies produce vitamin D, which is critical for absorbing calcium and phosphorus, and keeping our immune systems healthy. It’s a survival mechanism inbuilt in us. This smile-inducing vitamin goes a long way to fighting diseases, combatting depression and can even have positive effects on weight loss.
.
.
While the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic grips nations across the whole world, we’re all feeling the impacts in some capacity. For those of us in the UK, there seems no end to furloughs, working from home, indefinite leave and troubling financial situations, all while things are allegedly easing and measures are steadily lifting. So, what better way to come to terms with the situation and let your mind rest than to sit in the sun? I know I certainly relish throwing open the curtains in the morning when there are beams of light flooding in.
.
.
It’s only natural that many people — whether they’ve never worried about anything a day in their lives — will be experiencing heightened anxiety at present. So, the positive power of sunlight will be stemming feelings of despair, lifting spirits and keeping irritability at bay. This is why Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) can be so prevalent during the winter — there’s no mood-enhancer to brighten up people’s days.
.

So, whether you prefer to retreat to the shade or slather on the sun cream and embrace the warmth, we should be thankful that we’ve been blessed with some teen-topping temperatures while we’re stuck in lockdown.
